5 simple steps to a positive mindset
Turn on the TV and it’s one bad news story after another which doesn’t fill one with much confidence for a brighter tomorrow or lead naturally to a positive mindset. Our world has changed so much recently that it can be hard to see how things can get better. However, even though the world may seem all dark and gloomy right now, I think it is possible to expect this year to be better than the last. How can you do that, you may ask?
Well, it all starts with having a positive mindset and here are a few ways you can do that:
This past year may not have turned out to be exactly as you wanted, but I’m sure if you think about it, you’ll find things to be thankful for. Gratitude helps us to focus on what we have, rather than on what we do not have. Whilst it may be tempting to focus on the aspects of your life that aren’t living up to your dreams, why not choose instead to focus on the aspects that are, and even those that are beyond what you ever dreamed?
Choose to pursue joy
By this, I mean, choose to do the things that make you happy. And do them now. There’s never a good time as the present to take that trip, or spend that time with your best friends, or go to that fancy restaurant. One of the things the past year has taught me is that tomorrow is not promised to anyone. And not to be a Debbie downer on things at all, but to me what this means is that I need to try and live my so called ‘best life’ now, rather than wait for a more opportune time that may never come.
Remember that seasons change
Life is constantly evolving, and we constantly move from one season to another. You may be in a season of waiting right now, but I can assure you that it will one day pass. Or perhaps you’re in a season of uncertainty. That too, will one day change as things become clearer. Instead of worrying about when exactly things will change, however, I encourage you to learn the lessons in your current season, confident that they are preparing you for another season to come.
Believe in your ability to adapt
There is a saying that we can’t control everything that happens to us, but we can choose how we respond to it. We don’t know what the new year holds, and this past year may have left you feeling rough. But it is possible to still smile in the midst of the pain and you can still find moments of joy even when your current situation feels far from it. Our ability to adapt as humans is a precious gift so you can go into the new year knowing that whatever happens, you can handle it.
Don’t give up
In a recent sermon I was encouraging our Church family to hold on to hope, and not give up. This can sometimes be easier said than done, but we must remember that Christ Himself is our hope, and His Spirit is here to help us in the tough times. So, whatever this past year has been like for you, remember that God loves you and always has good plans for you. Trust that there are better days ahead, and whatever the coming year brings, you are not on your own.
None of us know what the future holds and so much of life is outside of our control. But choosing to have a positive mindset as we walk into the new year is one way we can make a head start, whatever comes our way.
